note
-
An alternative estimation technique to test the hypotheses previously outlined is to estimate the sectoral wage equations twice: the first estimation includes Wife's Education X Probability That Wife Works (term 1) and drops Wife's Education X Probability That Wife Works in Same Sector (term 2), and the second estimation includes term 2 and drops term 1. The expected result is that term 1 has a stronger negative effect on productivity in the first estimation than term 2 does in the second estimation. If the wife works in the labor market, her husband's productivity gains from her education will fall because of decreased specialization. However, if she works in the same sector as the husband does, the gains will not fall as much because of the improvements in productivity resulting from increased association.
