    • See Paul Krugman, "The Myth of Asia's Miracle," Foreign Affairs, November/December 1994, who argues that the rapid economic growth in East Asia has primarily resulted from the mobilization of factor inputs rather than the growth in total factor productivity. On this basis, Krugman suggests that this growth will not be sustainable when East Asian economies have exhausted the potential to mobilize basic factor inputs of labour and capital.

    • Meetings of APEC's leaders are, by mutual agreement, not referred to as "Summits," as this carries the connotation of a meeting of Heads of Governments or States. This is to facilitate the inclusion of Taiwan and Hong Kong, which are not formally recognized by many members and do not constitute states, as such. For similar reasons, the word "country" is scrupulously avoided in the APEC lexicon, in favour of "member" or "economy."

    • APEC's policy dialogue is led by the committee on Trade and Investment, which heads up work on Trade and Investment Liberalization and Facilitation, and the Canadian-chaired Economic Committee which coordinates APEC's Economic and Technical Cooperation by reviewing the activity of APEC's ten working groups: Transportation; Telecommunications; Tourism; Energy; Human Resources Development; Industrial Science and Technology; Fisheries; Marine Resources Conservation; Trade and Investment Data; Trade Promotion. APEC also benefits from the expertise of three ad hoc expert groups on small and medium-sized enterprises, agricultural technology, and environment/sustainable development.
