of special interest. Two phylogenetically unrelated groups of fishes perform electrolocation. Not only do they share this basic function, but both fishes perform jamming avoidance responses of identical form. Moreover, they share rather complex computational algorithms. Different brain areas, however, are used to perform a certain step of neuronal computation. Comparative implications are discussed.

Neuronal circuitry for comparison of timing in the electrosensory lateral line lobe of an African wave-type electric fish, Gymnarchus niloticus

of outstanding interest. Intracellular recording and labeling were performed in a neural circuit that detects phase differences in the microsecond range. Phase-locked neurons spread axon terminals in both halves of a medullary structure, the electrosensory lateral line lobe. Neurons sensitive to phase differences are found in the inner cellular layer of this structure. These neurons respond to changes in small phase differences, but ignore steady-state differences in phase.

of special interest. On the basis of multiunit recording data in the inferior colliculus of a bat, Eptesicus, the authors have developed a new theory that bats' hyperacuity is endowed by time expansion. Latency of multiple unit response peaks to pulse-echo pairs changes by 100-200 μs as echo delay changes by about 5 μs.

of special interest. A whole-cell recording technique using patch-clamp pipettes is refined for in vivo preparation of electric fish. This method permits long-term recording of synaptic potentials as well as action potentials in preparations showing electrical behavior.
