Odour encoding by temporal sequences of firing in oscillating neural assemblies
-
of outstanding interest. Establishes the existence of a variety of odor response profiles in locust antennal lobe projection neurons, and the superimposition of these slow temporal patterns on a global oscillatory synchronization. Shows that pairs of neurons can produce many spikes in response to an odor, but that only some of these spikes (in well-defined time windows) synchronize with the spikes produced by other neurons. A single neuron can thus be synchronized with a succession of other neurons, and the odor-evoked population of synchronized neurons thus constantly evolves throughout an odor response. Not all spikes produced by a single neuron are locked to the global oscillation.

Odor encoding by temporal sequences of firing in oscillating neural assemblies
-
of outstanding interest. Establishes that the slow temporal patterns discovered in [39] are very precisely locked to the oscillatory synchronization of projection neurons [38] in the locust antennal lobe. Shows that information about odor identity is present in the timing of spikes relative to the global oscillatory response. That is, each spike in each responsive neuron can be assigned a cycle-specific probability of occurrence in each cycle of the population oscillation. Changing the odor stimulus sometimes produces no change in the total number of spikes produced by a neuron, but rather, produces a change in the timing of these spikes. Shows that the phase of the spikes does not contain information about the stimulus, and that oscillatory synchronization allows, in principle, combinatorial coding in time.

Distinct mechanisms for synchronization and temporal patterning of odor-coding cell assemblies
-
of outstanding interest. Shows that the synchronization of the projection neurons established in [38] is caused by local negative feedback via GABAergic local neurons (see also [43]). Blocking fast GABA receptors with local picrotoxin injection into the antennal lobe abolishes synchronization, but does not alter the responsiveness of the neurons to odors or their slow temporal response patterning. This manipulation may thus open the way to direct tests in vivo of the functional role of oscillatory synchronization for learning, sensation and perception.

Central and reflex neuronal responses elicited by odor in a terrestrial mollusk

of outstanding interest. Detailed study of the responses of the olfactory system of the mollusc Limax maximus to natural attractive or repulsive odors, using extracellular recording and voltage-sensitive dye imaging techniques. Details the properties of the oscillatory wave observed in the procerebral lobe and of its collapse during odor processing. Establishes output responses downstream of the lobe, whose characterization will be essential to test the significance of the synchronization. Shows that sensory stimuli can lead to changes in spatio-temporal patterns of activity rather than in average levels of activity.

of outstanding interest. Synthetic approach used to manufacture an odor-sensitive device (see also [55]). Detection is accomplished by optical methods, using odor-evoked fluorescence spectral changes in a dye that is embedded in a variety of polymers. Decoding is accomplished by feedforward neural networks trained on the spatial and temporal patterns of the odor-evoked responses. Performance is improved by considering temporal information, giving support to hypotheses derived from biological results.
