The term "soliton" was invented by N.J. Zabusky and M.D. Kruskal (Phys. Rev. Lett. 15, 240 (1965) ). In a numerical solution to the Korteweg-deVries equation, Zabusky and Kruskal found particle-like stability in solitary waves which preserved their identity even through numerous interactions with one another.
