    • 2 would not change the dipole selection rules or our previous conclusions [28,29,33] that the carboxylate and phenyl ring planes are perpendicular to the surface. It probably does not occur during correction for the x-y piezo calibration since the apparent rotation can be seen in the raw data as well. If an anisotropic response function images an array of delta functions, the observed image (the convolution) would have the shape of the (anisotropic) response function, repeated at the location of the delta functions and could account for the observed rotation. Because the calibration of the c(8 × 2) unit cells was corrected using linear transformations, a non-linear drift can be excluded and a linear drift cannot produce the observed rotation.

    • The smaller corrugation shown in Fig. 3 for benzoate (< 1 Å) is due to the large radius of curvature of the tip (50-100 Å) compared to the adsorbate-adsorbate distance such that the tip cannot probe down between adsorbates to reach the substrate; the step height in Fig. 4B (∼4 Å) reveals the effective height of the molecule because the (2 × 3)N regions are large compared to the radius of curvature of the tip.

    • Introduction of benzoic acid by backfilling with the substrate at room temperature produced rather large domains, as shown in Fig. 2. The lack of purification of the benzoic acid by sublimation to release trapped air in backfilling experiments could suggest the role of oxygen in the adsorption process, similar to formic acid adsorption.

    • We should also note that the angular dependence of the elastically scattered intensity repeatedly showed a splitting of about 4°, which could be due to either twinning of the crystal (not observed in Laue diffraction of the crystal) or faceting of the surface. Measurements of the dipole losses along both "specular" beams showed no significant differences, indicating the presence of upright benzoate species on both facets.
