    • To reference the results of valence photoemission to the vacuum level, one needs the electrochemical potentials of the solid surfaces. We have used work functions instead of electrochemical potentials. Since the difference in the bands of alumina and ZnO in Figure 13 is very large, this approximation does not effect our conclusions.
