    • note
    • The ability of the ω-hydroxyalkanethiol monolayers to protect the Au surface from passivation in the protein solutions depends on the formation of a uniformly hydrophilic surface. We find that incomplete thiol monolayers or monolayers containing thiols with hydrophobic terminal groups passivate quickly upon exposure to these protein solutions. The local hydrophobic surface serves as a nucleation site for protein adsorption and denaturation.

    • note
    • 2 is increased or decreased. During the introduction of air into the cell, the reoxidation wave decreases in intensity with no significant shift in its potential. Likewise, upon removing the air with purified nitrogen, the reoxidation wave increases to its former magnitude without large shifts in its peak potential.
