    • This effect was first observed by Luzzi with a high resolution transmission electron microscope in the same building, and quantified with a Gauss meter. At rush hour, random a.c. magnetic fields were superimposed on d.c. fields which varied slowly over a few-hour period. The time-varying fields are probably produced by trains passing 200 m from the experimental site. Satisfactory cancellation of fields for through-focal series was obtained by enclosing the microscope with one pair of parallel Helmholtz coils parallel to the lab floor and ceiling, and varying currents with a feedback loop from a Gauss meter external to the microscope.
