The CPS was empirically derived from a broader, 300-item personality test, called the Adjective Check List. This broader instrument is the work of H.G. Gough and A.B. Heilbrun and details are available in The Adjective Check List Manual (Palo Alto, CA: Consulting Psychologists Press, 1965). Details of the 30-item CPS can be found in H.G. Gough, "A Creative Personality Scale for the Adjective Check List," Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 37/8 (August 1979): 1398-1405.

This argument derives largely from Teresa Amabile and her colleagues, who argue that people will be creative when they are intrinsically motivated by the work itself, rather than extrinsically motivated by external factors such as rewards. See T.M. Amabile, The Social Psychology of Creativity (New York, NY: Springer-Verlag, 1983).

Accepted suggestions were scheduled for implementation. Once these suggestions were implemented, a senior executive of the firm attached a monetary value to them. By the end of the study period, the value of each employee's implemented suggestions ranged from $217 to $374,899.

These results display statistical interactions previously reported in G.R. Oldham and A. Cummings, "Employee Creativity: Personal and Contextual Factors at Work," Academy of Management Journal, 39/3 (June 1996): 607-634. Figure 1 illustrates the CPS x job complexity two-way interaction and Figure 2 shows the CPS x job complexity x supportive supervision x non-controlling supervision four-way interaction.

note
-
Figures 3 and 4 display three-way statistical interactions between scores on the CPS, scores on the KAI, and the amount of co-worker competition present. These interactions were determined using hierarchical Ordinary Least Squares Regression and were plotted by dividing employees into groups based on above-median versus below-median scores on the CPS and the KAI. The number of creative suggestions shown in Figure 3 reflect a log-linear scale.
