    • The Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) is a private, nonprofit, quasi-official accrediting organization that represents five professional groups: the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Dental Association. It accredits some 5,300 hospitals and 6,000 nursing homes. Accreditation for healthcare institutions is required for reimbursement from government programs, including Medicare and Medicaid.
