    • Several years before the ideas of the present paper were conceived, Jan M. H. M. Scheutjens brought to our attention that it is awkward to explain the enthalpy effect by saying that introducing something in water that cannot participate in hydrogen bonding leads to increased hydrogen bonding.

    • Unpublished calculations demonstrated that it makes little difference to attribute to "proton" - "proton" and to "lone pair" - "lone pair" contacts energies that are different from the other "non-hydrogen-bonding" contacts. Hence, in order to keep the number of parameters as low as possible, we choose not to do so.
