Mouffe is wrong, I think, when she insists that Oakeshott's model of civil association requires to be supplemented by the work of Carl Schmitt because Oakeshott is a purely consensual theorist of the political 'What is completely missing in Oakeshott is division and antagonism.' The Return of the Political, She is correct, however, in so far as she maintains that Oakeshott's model of civil association does not, and cannot, provide a complete account of the political. This, at any rate, is the interpretation of Oakeshott implicit in the position defended here
