This method replaces each coil by two equivalent filaments with half the turns of the coil associated with each, and thus represents a significant savings in computer time compared to calculating the N(N + 1)/2 mutual inductance combinations in coils with large numbers of turns. We find that the same replacement gives values for M that are very close (within 0.1%) to a calculation involving all the winding permutations.
