At a conference in Copenhagen, 1929 Bengt Edlén and Algol Ericson presented SXE spectra that confirmed early calculations on two-electron systems. An account is given by B. Edlén: Physica Scripta T 3, 5 (1983)

Momentum conservation also applies to the electronic decay channel. It has recently been demonstrated [C.G. Olson, P.J. Benning, M. Schmidt, D.W. Lynch, D.M. Wieliczka, P. Canfield: Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4265, (1996); S.L. Molodtsov, M. Richter, S. Danzenbächer, S. Wieling, L. Steinbeck, C. Laubschat: Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 142 (1997)] that local information on band states can be extracted when the momentum of the outgoing electron is measured. This "local" band mapping works only when the excited electron couples strongly to the core hole and participates in the Auger decay. In this sense this technique is complementary to RIXS.

Recently, van Veenendaal and P. Carra [Phys. Rev. Lett, 78, 2839 (1997)] argued that in all cases discussed in the literature so far, excitonic effects has hindered the band mapping attempts. Here we demonstrate that this is not the case for SiC

For the electronic decay channel, (6) is changed only in one aspect: The first matrix element is now a Coulomb, rather than a dipole matrix element. The dynamics at resonances is thus very similar in the two cases. The lifetime interference effect is well established for vibrational substates in small molecules, see e.g., M. Neeb, J.-E. Note that interference between core hole states were demonstrated before monochromatized synchrotron radiation became available [see e.g. N. Correia, A. Flores-Riveros, H. Ågren, K. Helenelund, L. Aplund, U. Gelius: J. Chem Phys. 83, 2035 (1985 )], high above threshold excitation (it's always a one-step process). The novelty is that the monochromatized synchrotron radiation can be tuned to regions where the effects are large. This is discussed in several contributions to this issue (J. Nordgen, S. Svensson, H. Ågren, F. Gel'mukhanov), under the concept of "detuning". The theoretical analysis shows that increasing interference effects can be associated with decreasing "scattering time", with direct dynamical implications
