    • The static indentation of the AFM tip into the PS domains is approximately 5 nm, compared to less than 1 nm in the case of PMMA, as measured by a comparison between contact mode and tapping mode AFM. The variation of the indentation depth due to the modulation is less than 0.6 nm. The molecular origin of the difference in local stiffness is not known, but the AFM elasticity experiment resembles macroscopic hardness (indentation) tests where PMMA is found to be harder (Rockwell hardness M80-M105) compared to PS (Rockwell hardness M65-M85).

    • x and Au surfaces forms only after spincoating from THF. For toluene and MEK, the lateral PS-rich and PMMA-rich domains extend almost entirely to the Au surface (Figure 2c,i). Only traces of PMMA between the PS domains and the respective substrate surface are left.
