note
-
The focusing at low energy is often done by other types of lenses, e.g. Einzel-lenses. However, in cyclic accelerators it is very important to avoid non-linear elements (sextupoles, octupoles etc.) in order to avoid excitation of non-linear resonances.

Actually, for very heavy ions, the beam will sag in the straight sections owing to gravity, eventually limiting the mass to a finite value. Jørgen S. Nielsen, private communications.
