    • The rate equation approximation is applicable within the limits of validity of Fermi's golden rule. That is to say, it is assumed in this article that the atom-field coupling constant is small (i.e., weak-coupling regime) as for conventional lasers. On the other hand, in the situation (such as for a "one-atom laser" [Phys. Rev. A 46 (1992) 5944]) in which the coupling constant is large (i.e., strong-coupling regime) we must consider the coherent atom-field interaction. In such a case the adiabatic approximation breaks down. Further discussion on this point is beyond the scope of this article.
