    • We have carefully checked whether the time dependence of the fluctuations is influenced by the tip. We have measured F(t) as a function of the tunneling current, the applied tunneling voltage and the scan rate (compare also Ref. [12]). In all cases, the time dependence remained unchanged.

    • For the determination of the exponent we have fitted the parameters a, b and α in Eq. (8) for different time intervals. In the negative potential regime the fitting parameters are consistent for all time intervals only for the exponent 1/4, while for the other exponents 1/3 and 1/2 the parameters depend on the time interval which was analyzed. Frequently, even negative values for a are obtained which is a clear indication that these exponents are not a meaningful fit to the data. In the positive potential regime, we obtained consistent parameters for all time intervals only for the exponent 1/2.
