3. Results are drawn from a September 1996 survey of 26 out of 87 UK MEPs. Surveys were distributed to all UK MEPs and were returned by 29% of Labour MEPs (N=18), 28% of Conservative MEPs (N=5), 100% of Liberal Democrats (N=2), and 50% of Scottish Nationalists (N=1). The sample is also broadly representative of those elected in each election.
4. Results of the 1996 survey are contrasted with national estimates based on (now) conservative figures from the 1986 Letter Writing Bureau survey.
