As pointed out by Stephen Poole (NIBSC, Potters Bar), given that various LPS preparations differ both qualitatively and quantitatively in their biopotency, preparations of LPS should be standardised (expressed in IU of endotoxin/ml), for allowing appropriate comparison between laboratories of the biological responses and mechanisms induced by LPS.
