    • Energy dissipation by the surface collisions (the emitted secondary energy is much less than the primary) leads to nonconservation of the phase-space area, thereby allowing a wide range of initial conditions to converge to the same point. If the surface collisions where elastic, the phase area would be conserved; initial conditions near the fixed phase would oscillate around it.
