    • For example, the crucial role played in gas-sensitive devices by surface effects in active, sensitive materials evidences the technological importance of an accurate knowledge of the granulometry and morphology of thin films at submicrometric and nanometric sizes.

    • This new mode of operation is based on an oscillating AFM cantilever: while it is oscillating near its resonance frequency (typically 300 kHz, as in the parent technique "non-contact" AFM) it touches (taps) the sample surface during the lateral x and y scans; the z height information is obtained from the change in amplitude of the oscillating lever.

    • The coverage has been estimated by calculating the fraction of the total area occupied by PC islands in the SPM images, while in the XPS measurements it was calculated estimating the ratio 3 × area(N 1s)/area(C 1s) (upon correction of atomic sensitivity factors). This ratio gives an estimate of the fraction of the C 1s signal from Ni-PC with respect to the corresponding signal from graphite. Note that in this latter estimation we assumed that no residual C 1s signal from the HOPG substrate came from the region covered with phthalocyanine. This assumption is justified by the average height of the adsorbed islands of about 6 nm (well beyond the escape depth, roughly 2 nm, of photoelectrons).
