For an experimental description, see [7a]. For the THG measurements, chloroform solutions with concentrations between 0.1 and 0.4 wt.-% were used. The solutions were placed in a 1.0 or 0.2 mm thick fused silica cell, which was rotated in a laser beam (Maker-fringe method). The laser source was a pulsed (1 Hz. 80 ns, 35 mJ) holmium laser at the wavelength of λ= 2.1 μm. This novel wavelength was used because of the high absorption coefficients exhibited below 700 nm by some of the compounds. The data reduction to calculate γ (Table 1) was performed as previously described (F. Kajzar, J. Messier, Phys. Rev. 1985, A32, 2352).

The working electrode was a glassy carbon disc (2 mm in diameter), the counter electrode a Pt wire, and the reference electrode an aqueous Ag/AgCl electrode. All redox potentials shown are referred to the ferrocene/ferricinium (Fc/Fc⊕) redox couple (ferrocene used as internal standard).
