The σ-characteristics may be relevant for some dynamic measurements, provided that the time scale of experimentation is smaller than the characteristics time of polymer diffusion through the membranes.

In fact the additivity of the van der Waals and undulation terms in equation (17) is not realy correct: see Milner S.T. and Roux D., J. Phys. II France 2 (1992) 1741. On the contrary, the additivity of the electrostatic term and the undulation term, as well as the additivity of the polymer-mediated term and the undulation term are correct (Didier Roux, private communication and Ref. [14]). However, in the present case, this delicate question is not really relevant, since the van der Waals interaction can be neglected.

note
-
Note that for very high polymer concentration (> 10%), the solution cannot be viewed as a semi-dilute solution of polymer; it is rather a concentrated solution, for which we did not calculate the polymer contribution to the layer compression modulus.
