Similar "dimensional reductions" arise in critical phenomena due to confinement or strong surface interactions. See, for example: Nemirovsky, A. M.; Freed, K. F. Nucl. Phys. B 1986, 270 [FS16], 423. The continuum theory of confined systems breaks down with strong confinement as in the random walk adsorption model, so this model is instructive for a wide range of applications.
