Specific heat runs performed in a superconducting magnet in the persistent mode are free of induction (dB/dt) problems with their associated dissipation phenomena, in contrast to usual SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) magnetometry, where the sample moves through an inhomogeneous field. According to a classical symmetry argument, the melting line between a lattice and a liquid should not be terminated by a critical point [L.D. Landau and E.M. Lifschitz, Statistical Physics, transl. E. Peierls and R.F. Peierls (Pergamon, London, 1958) p. 259] [A.B. Pippard, The Elements of Classical Thermodynamics (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1957) p. 122]. However, the presence of short-range order in a liquid makes the argument hardly conclusive [C.J. Adkins, Equilibrium Thermodynamics (McGraw-Hill, London, 1968) p. 197].

note
-
In an adiabatic experiment, one might suspect spurious results if the temperature regulation of the adiabatic shield lags or overshoots during a first-order-like transition. Our experiment uses a computer-controlled regulator with nanovolt preamplifiers and full input/output optical isolation. The error (difference between the setpoint and the thermocouple signal) is recorded. It recovers from a 100:1 change in the heating rate in 10 seconds. During the flux line lattice melting transition, the maximum change in dT/dt is only 1.0025:1. The transient error does not peak out of the 2 nV rms noise (75 μK at 78 K). The thermal conductance of the heat links between the adiabatic shield and the sample holder is 28 μW/K at 78 K. This causes 2.1 nW noise in the heating power, to be compared with the electrical heating power 0.14 mW at 78 K when dT/dt = 14 mK/s. The relative error on the heat capacity due to transients is therefore less than 15 ppm, well below the amplitude of the specific heat peak (0.25% of the total heat capacity, including the sample holder, in 16 T).
