    • Fibers suitable for crystal mounting loops can be obtained from a variety of sources. Small diameter (<0.02 mm) nylon fibers are present in certain brands of unwaxed dental floss, cosmetic cotton balls, and surgical suture material. Glass fibers around 0.01 mm in diameter can be obtained from commercial glass wool.

    • It has not been demonstrated, however, that a higher cooling rate alone is always desirable. Faster cooling may even place greater thermal stress on the crystal. Of course, with a higher cooling rate a lower concentration of cryoprotectant can be used, which may prove important in some cases.

    • Cooling in a liquid cryogen has reduced damage in some crystals that did not flash cool well in the gas stream. For problem crystals, it may also be helpful to alter other aspects of the mounting procedure. Using olive oil rather than harvest buffer to suspend the crystal in the loop reduced the mosaicity increase in one case (J. Berendzen and I. Schlichting, personal communication, 1994).
