A marked increase in AM concentration was observed in rat plasma collected after intravenous infusion of lipopolysaccaride, suggesting that actively produced AM in vascular cells participates as a vasodilator in blood pressure regulation during endotoxin (septic) shock.

Plasma AM concentrations of immunoreactive AM in patients with sepsis were extremely elevated compared with those of normal subjects. Increased endogenous AM may be involved in the mechanism of cardiovascular abnormalities associated with sepsis.
