F-actin sequesters elongation factor 1 alpha from interaction with aminoacyl-tRNA in a pH-dependent reaction
-
24. Lui G, Tang J, Edmonds B, Murray J, Levin S, Condeelis J: F-actin sequesters elongation factor 1 alpha from interaction with aminoacyl-tRNA in a pH-dependent reaction. J Cell Biol 1996, 135:953-963. This work defines more specifically the relationship of actin filaments with the protein synthesis apparatus. The high-affinity binding and sequestration of EF1α to actin, and its release due to local fluctuations of pH, provides a model for how translation may be regulated by this actin-binding protein.

Two distinct pathways for the localization of RNAs at the vegetal cortex in Xenopus oocytes
-
25. Kloc M, Etkin LD: Two distinct pathways for the localization of RNAs at the vegetal cortex in Xenopus oocytes. Development 1995, 121:289-297. Two major pathways are described for the localization of maternal mRNAs in Xenopus. Some RNAs are transported via the 'mitochondrial cloud' to the vegetal pole, apparently independently of actin filaments or microtubules. The anchoring of the RNAs at the cortex requires actin filaments. Vg 1 RNA, however, requires microtubules for its transport, and actin, at least partially, for its anchoring.

Exogenous tau RNA is localized in oocytes: Possible evidence for evolutionary conservation of localization mechanisms
-
53. Litman P, Behar L, Elisha Z, Yisraeli JK, Ginzburg I: Exogenous tau RNA is localized in oocytes: possible evidence for evolutionary conservation of localization mechanisms. Dev Biol 1996. 176:86-94. Tau mRNA, which requires microtubules for localization, is able to localize in Xenopus by means of its 3'UTR, and its localization is indistinguishable from that of Vg1. Tau mRNA contains a functional binding site for the Vg1 RNA-binding protein, which is microtubule-associated.
