Successful atrial defibrillation with very-low-energy shocks by means of temporary epicardial wire electrodes
-
Cmolik BL, Ortiz J, Ayers GM, Lee JH, Geha AS, Waldo AL: Successful • atrial defibrillation with very-low-energy shocks by means of temporary epicardial wire electrodes. J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 1996, 111:392-398. In a canine sterile pericarditis model, biphasic shocks were found to be effective in cardioverting induced atrial fibrillation when delivered using a pair of temporary stainless steel wire electrodes placed overlying the right and left atrium. Atrial fibrillation was terminated with low voltage and energy requirements, suggesting that this is a practical approach to the management of postsurgical atrial fibrillation.

Feasibility of METRIX™ atrial defibrillation system in humans with atrial fibrillation
-
Sra J, Wharton M, Biblo L, for the METRIX System External Defibrillation •• Study Investigators: Feasibility of METRIX™ atrial defibrillation system in humans with atrial fibrillation [abstract]. J Am Coll Cardiol 1996, 27:375. The METRIX™ (Incontrol Inc., Redmond, VA) system properly detected sinus rhythm or atrial fibrillation and effectively delivered shocks to terminate atrial fibrillation in 10 patients. Additionally, it was found that the risk of ventricular proarrhythmia was low, suggesting that this is a feasible and promising device for treating atrial fibrillation.

Initial clinical experience of a human implantable atrial defibrillator
-
Lau CP, Tse HF, Lee K, Lok NS, Ho DSW, Soffer M, Camm AJ: Initial •• clinical experience of a human implantable atrial defibrillator [abstract]. PACE 1996, 19:625. This study tested an implantable atrial defibrillator in three patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. This early report showed that this is a well-tolerated and effective device for treating atrial fibrillation.
