Contrast-enhanced CT and magnetic resonance (MR) scanning showed similar ability to define pancreatic necrosis and the location and extent of peripancreatic inflammatory changes and fluid collections. MR appeared superior to CT in demonstrating the complex nature of a fluid collection in one patient.

Complications in this group occurred more than twice as often as spontaneous resolution (41% vs. 20%).

The three groups showed similar bacteriological findings but distinctly different presentations, clinical courses and outcomes with morbidity and mortality rates respectively of 26% and 9% for infected pseudocysts, 40% and 25% for pancreatic abscesses and 90% and 48% for infected necrosis, confirming that they were distinct entities.
