6 colony-forming units (CFU) of attenuated bovine M. tuberculosis (BCG, Tokyo 172 strain, Japan BCG Laboratory). At 3 months of age, 97 to 98% of the children (groups 1 to 4 in Table 1) were tuberculin-negative and received BCG.

N. S. Galbraith, A. Hanson, R. Shoulman, D. W. Andres, D. B. Lee, Br. Med. J. 1, 647 (1972); T. Oettinger, A. Holm, I. M. Mtoni, A. B. Andersen, K. Hasloov, Infect. Immun. 63, 4613 (1995). As a rule, positive tuberculin responses are caused by infection with M. tuberculosis, whereas intermediate responses are caused by exposure to nontuberculous mycobacteria or immunization with BCG. We cannot exclude the possibility that some of the conversions to tuberculin positivity after 6 years of age might be attributable to a second immunization with BCG, especially because the Tokyo 172 BCG used is strongly immunogenic, having retained the gene for the major antigen, MPT 64; nor do we know what role environmental mycobacteria may have played in this semirural environment.
