Spine 1996, 21:339-344. This prospective study examined the 1-year period prevalence of acute severe back pain, defined as pain associated with restricted activity, and examined the care-seeking behaviors of individuals with this syndrome. Characteristics and outcomes (satisfaction with care) for individuals seeking care for back pain from chiropractors versus physicians are compared.

    • Van Der Heide A, Remme CA, Hofman DM, Jacobs JWG, Bijlsma JWJ: Predication of progression of radiologic damage in newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis Rheum 1995, 38:1466-1474. This prospective study in patients with newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis showed radiographic damage at 1 year to be greatest in individuals who were seropositive, had radiologic damage at baseline, and who had greater joint inflammation over the year. Specifically, joints that were more often inflamed were more likely to be damaged at 1 year.

    • Reisine S, McQuillan J, Fifield J: Predictors of work disability In rheumatoid arthritis patients: a five-year followup. Arthritis Rheum 1995, 38:1630-1647. This is a 5-year prospective study of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (71% women) showing that work characteristics were less important in determining work disability at 5 years than were disease severity at baseline and the desire to be at home. These results are in contrast with prior work disability studies in rheumatoid arthritis that have consistently suggested that work disability in this group is best predicted by work characteristics, specifically the control over pace and activity of work.
