Characterization of the microbial population during biofiltration and the influence of the inoculum source

De Castro A, Allen DG, Fulthorpe RR: Characterization of the microbial population during biofiltration and the influence of the inoculum source. In Proceedings of the 1996 Conference on Biofiltration. Edited by Reynolds FE. Tustin, CA: The Reynolds Group; 1996:164-172. This paper reports on experiments with sterilized compost and wood chips biofilters inoculated with either soil, activated sludge or a compost inoculum. The biofilter inoculated with activated sludge proved more stable and more efficient than the others. Changes in the process culture were monitored by analyzing the FAME fingerprint and reduced to two principal components.

Activity and three-dimensional distribution of toluene-degrading Pseudomonas putida in a multispecies biofilm assessed by quantitative in situ hybridization and scanning confocal laser microscopy
-
Moller S, Pedersen AR, Poulsen LK, Arvin E, Molin S: Activity and three-dimensional distribution of toluene-degrading Pseudomonas putida in a multispecies biofilm assessed by quantitative in situ hybridization and scanning confocal laser microscopy. Appl Environ Microbiol 1996, 12:4632-4640. This excellent paper reports various data on the structure of multispecies biofilms in a toluene-degrading biotrickling filter. Pseudomonas putida, the main primary pollutant degrader was present throughout the film, most probably because of large void channels in the biofilm allowing increased oxygen and toluene mass transfer. The in situ toluene degradation activity of P. putida was found to be lower in biofilms than in suspensions.

In Proceedings of the 89th Annual Meeting and Exhibition of the Air & Waste Management Association. Air & Waste Management Association; 1996:20. Microscopical observation of biofilms from an industrial-scale biotrickling filter used for hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide removal showed that the biofilms had a high water (89.6% by weight) and sulfur (1.4% by weight) content. The biofilm architecture showed essentially three regions, most of the microbial activity being concentrated in the external layer.

Performance of a styrene-degrading biofilter containing the yeast Exophiala jeanselmei
-
Cox HHJ, Moerman RE, Van Baalen S, Van Heiningen WNM, Doddema HJ, Harder W: Performance of a styrene-degrading biofilter containing the yeast Exophiala jeanselmei. Biotechnol Bioeng 1997, 53:259-266. This paper reports detailed investigations on the removal of styrene in perlite biofilters. Biofilters were operated at low pH (2.6-3), and the primary pollutant degrader was the fungus Exophiala jeanselmei. Profiles along the column for protein content, crude lipids, and organic matter are presented and discussed. Biofilm thickness did not affect elimination capacity nor did it affect the total protein content. The maximum elimination capacity could be increased by 50% by increasing the oxygen content in air, demonstrating that the process was limited by oxygen diffusion in the biofilm.
