    • In the early systematic discussions of nucleosynthesis (1, 2), the importance of two processes associated with neutron capture were stressed for the production of trans-Fe nuclei, up to and beyond U. The s-process involved slow capture, in which any radioactive nucleus so formed would have time to decay before another neutron was captured. The r-process was more vigorous, so that even radioactive nuclei captured neutrons, until not more could be absorbed. The s-process occurs mostly in the slow, hydrostatic stages of intermediate mass stars, while the r-process has been identified historically with supernova explosions. See D. D. Clayton, Principles of Stellar Evolution and Nucleosynthesis (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1968).

    • Supported by NSF grant ASTRO94-17346, NASA grant NAGW-2798, and DOE LDRD-ER proposal 97-ERD-022. B. Remington and J. Kane spearheaded the experimental effort on NOVA. The simulation in Fig. 2 was run using a version of the PROMETHEUS code (made parallel by G. B.) on the Silicon Graphics Power Challenge at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications, in a 16-fold parallel mode, at a speed of 1.2 billion floating point operations per second (gigaflops). Special thanks are due L. Smarr, director of NCSA, for help and encouragement.
