Panic disorder: From theory to therapy
-
Edited by Salkovskis PM. New York: Guilford Press
-
Clark DM: Panic disorder: from theory to therapy. In Frontiers of cognitive therapy. Edited by Salkovskis PM. New York: Guilford Press; 1996:318 344. An excellent review of the cognitive theory of panic disorder, the experimental investigations that have been carried out to test it and responses to criticisms of the theory. An account of cognitive treatment was also given, as well as a summary of the controlled trials that have so far been carried out to test its effectiveness.

Otto MW, Whittal ML: Cognitive-behavior therapy and the longitudinal course of panic disorder. Psychiatr Clin North Am 1995, 18:803 820. A clearly written review in which the authors discussed the development of panic disorder from a cognitive-behavioural perspective, described the different elements involved in CBT and then explored the factors that influence the maintenance and extension of treatment gains.

A meta-analysis of treatment outcome for panic disorder
-
Gould RA, Otto MW, Pollack MH: A meta-analysis of treatment outcome for panic disorder. Clin Psychol Rev 1995, 15:819 844. A comprehensive review of 43 controlled studies carried out over 20 years, comparing the effectiveness of pharmacological, cognitive-behavioural and combined treatments. The authors concluded that, in general, CBT treatments yielded the largest effect sizes and the smallest attrition rates relative to pharmacotherapy and combined treatments and are cost effective.

Long-term outcome in cognitive-behavioural treatment of panic disorder: Clinical predictors and alternative strategies for assessment
-
Brown TA, Barlow DH: Long-term outcome in cognitive-behavioural treatment of panic disorder: clinical predictors and alternative strategies for assessment. J Consult Clin Psychol 1995, 63:754 765. The authors showed the fluctuating course of panic disorder by comparing 2-year outcome findings from both cross-sectional and longitudinal assessments of 63 patients. Unlike many other studies, the authors also included an account of the treatments given during the follow-up period and compared patients who sought further treatment to patients who did not.
