This dog study demonstrated that ileal infusion of carbohydrate increased post-prandial exocrine pancreatic enzyme secretion and slowed gastric emptying and small bowel transit. Peptide YY was increased, suggesting that this hormone may play a role in this regulatory phenomenon.

Gut 1995, 37:216-219. This human study documents that coarse, rather than fine, bran delays gastric emptying and that the accelerating effect of bran on small bowel transit may be due to it enhancing the propulsive effects of eating on ileal motility.

Abnormal duodenal perception was found in a group of patients with functional dyspepsia. A small subset of patients with high H. pylori titres had particularly low thresholds for perception.
27. Serra J, Azpiroz F, Malagelada JR: Perception and reflex responses to intestinal distention in humans are modified by simultaneous or previous stimulation. Gastroenterology 1995, 109:6:1742-1749. This elegant paper demonstrates that both simultaneous stimulation and previous stimulation of the intestine affect perception of balloon distension in healthy humans. This conditioning effect is obviously important in the interpretation of perception studies.

Of 35 patients with IBS predominant diarrhea studied, 43% displayed abnormal 24-hour ambulatory jejunal motility as compared with none of 50 control patients. Changes were heterogeneous, ranging from mild quantitative changes to more severe features, described previously in chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction.
