One item of the Hamilton Rating Scale for depression predicted dementia after 1 5 years with control of age, gender, language of assessment and repeatedly given memory and concentration tests (relative risk 2.94).

An outstanding study comparing younger with older suicides using an informant, a consensus diagnosis, multiple logistic regression, and stressing the importance of late onset depression in the elderly.

Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci 1995, 245: 319 325. This is an interesting study because the authors arrived at the same result regarding prevalence of major depression old age as the Epidemiological Catchment Area study [2], but by using a different method.

40. Helmchen H, Linden M, Wernicke T: Psychiatric morbidity in old age. Results from the Berlin aging study. Nervenarzt 1996, 67:739 750. A survey of a stratified sample of old and very old Berlin citizens. The extremely careful and exacting multidisciplinary investigations may have led to the high number of dropouts. The paper presents the psychiatric data, which are part of a much more complete picture. The prevalence of major depression is higher than previously found [39]; still minor depression is more frequent.
