Stevenson RE, Massey PS, Schroer RJ, McDermott S, Richter B: Preventable traction of mental retardation: analysis based on individuals with severe mental retardation. Ment Retard 1996, 34:182-188. Although demonstrated with an unrepresentative institutional population, the methodology should be refined, developed and applied in whole populations to estimate the potential for prevention with current technologies.

Lifetime exposure to environmental lead and children's intelligence at 11-13 years: The Port Pirie cohort study
-
Tong S, Baghurst P, McMichael A, Sawyer M, Mudge J: Lifetime exposure to environmental lead and children's intelligence at 11-13 years: the Port Pirie cohort study. BMJ 1996, 312:1569-1575. More data from the Port Pirie study which examine whether apparent losses in IQ persist 1 decade after reductions in blood lead; there appears to be a dose related negative association between high blood lead at any time and IQ.

Predictors of mortality in children with severe mental retardation: The effect of placement
-
Strauss D, Eyman RK, Grossman HJ: Predictors of mortality in children with severe mental retardation: the effect of placement. Am J Public Health 1996, 86:1429-1432. More interesting aspects of comparative mortality than usual: the study suggests that people in institutional care have a lower mortality than those at home or in the community settings when many disability confounders are controlled for. Raises important questions that are explored in an editorial [10].
