This is the first and only prospective study to identify pudendal neuropathy and anal sphincter defects in both primiparous and multiparous women. Thirty-five per cent of women sustain trauma to the anal sphincters during their first delivery, one third of whom develop detecatory symptoms in the short term. Forceps delivery is the single independent factor associated with anal sphincter damage.
