Alcohol misuse and adolescent sexual behaviors and risk taking
-
Fergusson DM, Lynskey MT: Alcohol misuse and adolescent sexual behaviors and risk taking. Pediatrics 1996, 98:91-96. Data obtained at age 16 years for adolescents participating in a longitudinal study were analysed to examine relationships between alcohol misuse defined by frequent, heavy, or problem drinking and high-risk sexual behaviors. Part of the association was attributable to the influence of common family, individual, and peer factors, whereas other high-risk sex behaviors were found to be independent of this relationship, supporting a causal mechanism.

Alcohol misuse and juvenile offending in adolescence
-
Fergusson DM, Lynskey MT, Horwood J: Alcohol misuse and juvenile offending in adolescence. Addiction 1996, 91:483-494. Data obtained at age 16 years for adolescents participating in a longitudinal study were analysed to define relationships between alcohol misuse and property damage as well as violence. The association of alcohol misuse with property damage was fully statistically attributable to the influences of intelligence, parental substance use, conduct problems in middle school, and association with delinquent peers. These factors account for part but not all of violent behavior, supporting at least a partial causal link in the latter.

Youth beliefs and knowledge about the risks of drinking while pregnant
-
MacKinnon DP, Williams-Avery RM, Pentz MA: Youth beliefs and knowledge about the risks of drinking while pregnant Pub Health Rep 1995, 110:754-763. The knowledge of high school and college students on the subject of the risks posed by alcohol in pregnancy was assessed, revealing significant misconceptions on the nature and permanence of alcohol-related fetal injury. These findings have implications for alcohol consumption behavior in pregnancy and appropriate prevention messages.
