Preliminary investigation of the pharmacology of the human internal anal sphincter
-
Parks AG, Fishlock DJ, Cameron JDH, et al.: Preliminary investigation of the pharmacology of the human internal anal sphincter. Gut 1969, 10:674-677. One of the original papers studying human internal anal sphincter in the organ bath and demonstrating different alpha-adrenergic and beta-adrenergic responses to noradrenaline. It also suggested that different parts of the sphincter may have different responses to acetylcholine.

Abnormalities of the innervation of the internal anal sphincter in faecal incontinence
-
Speakman CTM, Hoyle CHV, Kamm MA, et al.: Abnormalities of the innervation of the internal anal sphincter in faecal incontinence. Dig Dis Sci 1993, 38:1961-1969. First demonstration in the human internal anal sphincter that the contractile response to noradrenaline is alpha-I mediated. It is also shown that the response of internal anal sphincter (IAS) from incontinent patients had reduced sensitivity to noradrenaline.
