    • The temporal lobe is a target of output from the basal ganglia
    • of outstanding interest. The authors use modern transneuronal transport techniques to show that the target of the lateral substantia nigra is the temporal lobe, through the thalamus. This paper also includes a good review of the clinical findings and does a good job of relating structure to function. The authors conclude that the output of the basal ganglia influences higher-order aspects of visual processing.

This review provides neurophysiological, neuroanatomical, neurochemical, behavioral and clinical data suggesting that the basal ganglia play an important role in nociceptive sensorimotor integration. • of special interest. An important metabolic mapping study showing that when a single vibrissa is stimulated, a restricted part of cortex (a barrel field) becomes activated. The co-activated striatal region is not a single field, but several patchy fields that extend anteroposteriorly next to the external capsule, similar to the corticostriate projection. The importance of metabolic mapping studies is that they reveal functional activity over a large region at 100μm resolution in unanesthetized animals.

However, c-fos induction is possible following picrotoxin activation of the auditory cortex, which produces a widespread and strong activation. • A neostriatal habit learning system in humans
    • of outstanding interest. The authors used a new probabilistic learning task, similar to a gradually acquired associative learning task used in animal studies, to study neostriatal habit learning in humans. Parkinsonian patients, but not amnesic patients, show deficits in performing the task. The authors conclude that in humans, non-motor habits are processed in the striatum. The commentary on this article by Trevor Robbins in the same issue of Science cites confirming data of his own, which emphasizes a critical role for dopamine in associative memory, and points out that it is possible that non-striatal pathophysiology may contribute to the deficit.

    • Role of the primate striatum in attention and sensorimotor processes: Comparison with premotor cortex
    • of special interest. Monkeys were trained to perform a task in which visual stimuli served as cues for orienting spatial attention or cues for movement, depending on when they occurred during a trial. Many striatal neurons were preferentially active in relation to cues that directed spatial attention, but were also active following cues that instructed a motor act. These data suggest that both the caudate and putamen play a role in shifting attentional set and in the preparation of context-dependent motor actions.

    • Directional basis of initial visual exploration. A symptom of neglect in Parkinson's disease
    • of special interest. Using an oculomotor scanning task, the authors assessed initial visual exploration asymmetry in Parkinson's disease patients. The patients had initial visual exploration directed to the side contralateral to the side of the predominant signs. This observation closely parallels that of atypical exploration behavior found in neglect patients and hemiparkinsonian monkeys [65]. These findings add to the complex picture of cognitive and visuospatial abnormalities in Parkinson's disease and support a dopamine-dependent deficit directing attention in parkinsonism.

    • Cognitive deficits precede motor deficits in a slowly progressing model of parkinsonism in the monkey
    • of special interest. The authors examined the effects of chronic (24 week) exposure to low doses of MPTP on a variety of cognitive and motor functions in five Cynomolgus monkeys. All the monkeys developed a predictable pattern of cognitive and behavioral deficits that preceded the appearance of any motor deficits. The most important point of this study is that cognitive deficits pre-date, and are not secondary to, motor dysfunction in this model, and perhaps in Parkinson's disease in humans.

    • Complexity affects regional cerebral blood flow change during sequential finger movements

Active regions independent of sequence length included the left putamen. The authors suggest this independence reflects an 'executive' function.
