    • The convolution to a lower resolution was done as a pure convolution. The effect of that convolution is to model how the data would look if obtained with an intrinsically lower resolution spectrometer. Application of our convolution technique to other data sets showed that no artifacts were introduced. The effect is simply one of a Fourier filter where the high frequencies in the transform of the data are attenuated by a Gaussian filter.

    • The W. M. Keck Observatory is operated as a scientific partnership between the California Institute of Technology and the University of California. It was made possible by the generous financial support of the W. M. Keck Foundation. We acknowledge the assistance of W. Harrison at the telescope. We dedicate this paper to the memory of Professor Carl Sagan whose scientific contributions have strongly influenced the concepts presented here.
