The authors prospectively followed 27 individuals on isocaloric high fat and low fat, high carbohydrate diets demonstrating reductions in total, LDL, and HDL-cholesterol with an elevation in triglyceride levels. On the ad-lib low fat, high carbohydrate diet, however, the studied individuals lost weight (3.63 kg) with further lowering of LDL-cholesterol and return of triglyceride and total cholesterol: HDL-cholesterol ratio to baseline values. A range of weight loss (25 out of 27 individuals lost up to 13 kg, one stayed the same, and one gained weight) was seen as a result of reducing dietary fat intake consistent with differing individual susceptibility to the influence of dietary fat on obesity.

Metabolism 1996, 45:378-382. 366 adults from 100 nuclear French-Canadian families were studied using abdominal CT and underwater weighing for total fat mass and fat free mass. Adjusting for age, 70% of the variance of total abdominal fat could be explained by familial factors transmitted from parent to offspring. Adjusting for age and total fat mass, heritability estimates for subcutaneous abdominal fat was 46% and for visceral abdominal fat 56%.
