Blood 1996, 87:2082-2088. A large series that demonstrates improved survival in young patients who were given lower doses of cyclophosphamide. This result is achieved, however, at the expense of an increased graft rejection rate, especially in patients who have received relatively few erythrocyte transfusions prior to transplantation.

Blood 1996, 88:795-802. Reports the outcome of unrelated umbilical cord blood transplantation in 18 patients, most of which were HLA mismatched. A high engraftment rate was found but with a significant delay in platelet engraftment. The occurrence of GVHD compared favorably with that observed after marrow transplantation from similar donors.
