J Mol Biol 1997, 264:907-918. High resolution topographs of aquaporin-1 crystals obtained using transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy are compared. AFM images of native aquaporin-1 show a striking consistency with images of metal shadowed, freeze-dried specimens to a resolution of 0.9 nm. The surface-relief reconstruction from the error signal is similar to the relief reconstruction from the metal shadowed specimen.
