Int J Gynecol Pathol 1996, 15:201-216. This is an attempt to distinguish APAs from invasive endometrial adenocarcinomas with the help of immunohistochemical methods. The results show that the immunophenotypes of these two lesions are similar to each other.

Squamous metaplasia of the endometrium may be a consequence of progestin therapy for endometrial hyperplasia, and should therefore not be considered to represent persistence or progression of the original hyperplastic process.

19. Jacques SM, Qureshi F, Lawrence WD: Surface epithelial changes in endometrial adenocarcinoma: diagnostic pitfalls in curettage specimen. Int J Gynecol Pathol 1995, 14:191-197. Various surface changes can appear in uteri with endometrial adenocarcinoma. If these changes are present in scanty curettings, further investigation is necessary to rule out an underlying carcinoma.
20. Eichhorn JH, Young RH, Clement PB: Sertoliform endometrial adenocarcinoma: a study of four cases. Int J Gynecol Pathol 1996, 15:119-126. Sertoliform endometrioid carcinomas should be distinguished from endometrial stromal sarcoma with sex-cord-like elements and from uterine tumours resembling ovarian sex-cord tumours, which are neoplasms with which they may be confused on microscopic examination.

This publication establishes that endometrial adenocarcinomas are capable of enteric differentiation, which has not been described before.

The results suggest two pathways of endometrial carcinogenesis: one developing from oestrogen-stimulated hyperplasias, the other developing from atrophic endometrium with early p53 protein expression.
25. Pisani AL, Barbuto DK, Chen D, Ramos L, Lagasse LD, Karlan BY: HER-2/neu, p53 and DNA analysis as prognosticators for survival in endometrial carcinoma. Obstet Gynecol 1995, 85:729-734. The authors concluded that p53 over-expression is the strongest independent prognosticator of survival.
26. Chan WK, Mole MM, Levison DA, Ball RY, Lu Q-L, Patel K, Hanry AM: Nuclear and cytoplasmic bcl-2 expression in endometrial hyperplasia and adenocarcinoma. J Pathol 1995, 177:241-246. Bcl-2 expression was studied in endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma. While cytoplasmic bcl-2 expression of various degrees was found in hyperplasia and in well differentiated carcinoma, six of seven poorly differentiated carcinomas were bcl-2 negative. Although of interest, more studies are needed to determine the usefulness of bcl-2 as a prognostic marker.

Yamauchi N, Sakamolo A, Uozaki H, Iihara K, Machinami R: Immunohistochemical analysis of endometrial adenocarcinoma for bcl-2 and p53 in relation to expression of sex steroid receptor and proliferative activity. Int J Gynecol Pathol 1996, 15:202-208. Expression of bcl-2 seems to occur more frequently in oestrogen-related, low-grade carcinomas, whereas p53 over-expression is found more often in high-grade cancer.

Int Gynecol Pathol 1995, 14:255-259. The results of this study indicate that mutational activation of the c-Ki-ras gene may act at two points in endometrial carcinoma, namely by enhancing evolution of hyperplasia to adenocarcinoma and by producing an infiltrative growth with a fibrosing stromal response.

Cancer 1995, 75:2139-2146. C-erbB-2/neu and fibroblast growth factor-3, but not epidermal growth factor receptor, were amplified in endometrial cancer.

Hum Pathol 1995, 26:650-658. These authors found HPV16 using polymerase chain reaction in 13% and 5% of endometrial carcinomas from Japan and the USA, respectively.

32. Abulafia O, Triest W, Sherer DM, Hansen CC, Ghezzi F: Angiogenesis in endometrial hyperplasia and stage I endometrial carcinoma. Obstet Gynecol 1995, 86:479-485. In this study, which is the first of its kind in endometrial neoplasia, it was established that complex hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma are angiogenic, and that in stage I endometrial cancer depth of invasion and higher tumour grade correlate with angiogenic intensity.

Nucleolar organizer region counts using a colloid silver solution appear to be reliable markers to distinguish between benign, hyperplastic and malignant epithelial changes.
