Histological long-term outcome of furosemide-induced nephrocalcinosis in the young rat
-
Alon US, Kaplan RA, Gratny LL, Nichols MA: Histological long-term outcome of furosemide-induced nephrocalcinosis in the young rat. Pediatr Nephrol 1996, 10:191-194. A young rat model of furosemide-induced nephrocalcinosis demonstrates the development of renal calcifications despite normocalciuria, and only partial resolution of the calcifications up to 12 weeks after stopping the loop diuretic. The latter finding may explain the observation in children with a history of furosemide-induced nephrocalcinosis in whom, despite ultrasonographic resolution of the nephrocalcinosis, some abnormalities in renal function may persist.

The natural history of nephrocalcinosis in premature infants treated with loop diuretics
-
Pope JC, Trusler LA, Klein AM, Walsh WF, Yared A, Brock JW III: The natural history of nephrocalcinosis in premature infants treated with loop diuretics. J Urol 1996, 156:709-712. Furosemide-induced nephrocalcinosis was found to resolve in 50% of infants within 1 year of discontinuing diuretics. A predictive factor for the ultrasonographic resolution was a normal urine calcium:creatinine ratio during treatment with furosemide.

-
Taylor A, Sherman NH, Norman ME: Nephrocalcinosis in X-linked hypophosphatemia: effect of treatment versus disease. Pediatr Nephrol 1995, 9:173-175. This study substantiates the notion that nephrocalcinosis in patients with XLH is due to their treatment. In this particular study, a strong association was found between development of nephrocalcinosis and phosphate dose; however, others also reported an association with vitamin D.

Increased renal medullary echogenicity in neonates
-
Starinsky R, Vardi O, Batasch D, Goldberg M: Increased renal medullary echogenicity in neonates. Pediatr Radiol 1995, 25:S43-S45. This prospective study in newborns correlates medullary hyperechogenicity with proteinuria and demonstrates that medullary hyperechogenecity does not always indicate nephrocalcinosis. In most neonates, the protein-related hyperechogenecity resolved by age 2 months.
